Search Engine Optimization By Joseph Then

Search Engine Optimization.

Now, there are several different types of search engine optimization.
However, the bulk of these types fit into one of two large groups, which
essentially cover all of the bases: "on page optimization" and "off
page optimization." In this issue, we're going to focus in on on page
optimization.

So what is on page optimization? It's actually quite simple: it's the
act of tuning various elements on your site in order to rank better for
certain keywords and to rank for keywords which you previously did not.

One of the most popular types of on page search engine optimization is
page creation. The first step in the process of page creation is
conducting keyword research to derive a list of keywords (out of those that
related to your site) that have very few competing sites. Once you have
done this, you will want to take those keywords with little competition
and begin building pages based on them.

Ideally, you will want to use your given keyword as the page extension.
This will ensure that you rank well for it. Additionally, you will want
to use it approximately three times out of every 200 words in the body
of your page. It is important not to over-optimize or under-optimize;
otherwise, the results will be less than desirable.

Next, you will want to optimize all of your tags for the keywords you
selected. For instance, you will want to optimize your header tags by
using the keyword at least once between them. You will also want to
attempt to use the keyword at least once in your title tag.

You will also want to pay attention to where you use keywords. Ideally,
you will want to use your given keyword at least once in the starting
paragraph and at least once in the last paragraph.

You will also want to create pages that are roughly 300 to 500 words in
length. Anything shorter will be penalized by search engines; anything
longer wont always be fully ranked - and, as such, will be a waste of
money if you're purchasing content.

In addition to keyword and keyphrase optimization, you will also want
to tune a number of other "on page" elements.

One of the most important things you must also add is some dynamic
element. This is some that auto-updates itself, constantly adding new
content between indexings. This will continue to improve your search engine
ranking positions every time the search engines spider your site.

Once you complete all of that for each page, there is only one thing
left to do - that that is to create an internal linking structure that
actually makes sense to search engines. This means creating a structure
that allows visitors to navigate from any page on your site to any other
page on your site. You will also want to include both an XML sitemap
and an HTML sitemap.

Now, all of this information might seem overwhelming at first. In
reality, it isn't as hard as it might seem. It just takes practice. So get
out there and begin optimizing your on page factors.

While understanding
and employing lessons from that issue will be critical to your success,
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the lessons in today's issue
are actually considerably more important.

In today's issue, I'm going to explain what constitutes "off page
optimization" -- and then tell you precisely what different methods you can
use to improve your off page optimization scores with search engine
algorithms.

Let's start off with a simple definition of off page optimization. Now,
if you remember from our last lesson that "on page optimization"
consists of tweaking factors on your actual site pages, you can probably
guess what off page optimization is. That's right: it's altering or
creating factors OFF of your site pages that affect how your pages rank in
search engines.

What are some of the factors that you can tweak to improve your off
page optimization?

I personally recommend the following:

1)Submit your site to various website directories. From last count,
there were well over 400 directories that serve only to list sites. Many
of these directories have a page rank of 5 or higher. Note that all of
these directories will not directly confer benefits to your site; nor
will all of these directories grant entry for free. You will have to
determine whether or not getting listed is important enough to pay a one
time fee.

You will want to make sure that you at least attempt to get listed in
the more important, high page rank directories, such as the Yahoo
Directory or the DMOZ directory. Google gives significant weight to sites in
the DMOZ directory, which means getting listed there could
significantly improve your search engine ranking positions - and subsequently
affect the amount of traffic you receive.

You will also want to consider paying for submissions if they allow you
to get listed on the home page of a high page rank site. This will get
your site indexed faster; and it will also lend considerable rank to
your site.

And this brings us to our second form of off page optimization, which
also has to do with linking:

2)Find social bookmarking sites that do not use "no follow tags." Ping
your site to these social bookmarking sites. Remember to use tags
properly for your pages. For instance, look for categories that are
most-searched and use those categories as your tags. Additionally, you may want
to through in a few related tags that aren't updated often. This will
ensure that your site stays on top for a while, giving you a better
chance of gaining rank.

Now, in addition to these two forms of off page optimization, there are
several other ways in which you can optimize factors off of your site
in order to improve your search engine rankings; however, I wont go into
them in detail in this email, as there simply is not enough room. You
should, however, have a rough idea of what is involved in off page
optimization.


If you follow the search engine optimization strategy I outlined in the
previous two issues, you should begin to see considerable results in a
matter of weeks.

Now, in today's issue, I'm going to explain the most important part of
search engine optimization. This is actually something that belongs in
the "off page optimization" category; yet it is so important that it
deserves its own issue.

If you haven't guessed yet, what I'm talking about is exchanging links
with other webmasters. Now, this seems simple enough, but in reality,
almost every webmaster who does it bungles it horribly - especially when
they do it for the chief end of off page optimization.

So what should you keep in mind when setting up link exchanges?

The first thing to keep in mind is that you must be careful when
approaching other webmasters for reciprocal links. If you're looking for real
link partners - not ones who have a spam directory with 800,000 links
in it - you're going to find that many of them receive link exchange
requests on a daily basis. If you approach them like everyone else does,
they'll assume you're a link exchange spammer, not a genuine partner.

I personally suggest sending a "primer" email to potential link
exchange partners that evokes a response without directly asking about
exchanging links. If you actually get a reply, then ask whether or not they
would be interested in exchanging links.

Now, when actually exchanging links with other webmasters, there are a
number of important things to keep in mind.

The first thing you will want to keep in mind is that it isn't always a
numbers game. Rather than seeking out hundreds of low quality partners,
try to find a half dozen high-quality partners. And rather than using a
massive directory, actually exchange front page links with other sites.
Many link directories are unranked by Google - and, as such, will not
help your search engine rankings.

The next thing to keep in mind when exchanging links with other
webmasters is that you should always include targeted keywords in your anchor
text. This is precisely what search engine spiders will look at when
determining what your site is all about. Additionally, you will want to
include surrounding text that is related and also contains keywords.

Last, but still very important, you will want to create different
variations of your link for each site that displays it; otherwise, your
linking text will actually be counted as duplicate content, preventing you
from receiving any additional benefits from said links.

So, to reiterate: in order to have a successful linking campaign, you
will need to use keywords in your anchor and surrounding text, you will
need to change your text, you will need to find good partners, and you
will need to focus on exchanging links with high page rank, relevant
sites.

If you follow all of these guidelines carefully, you will find that
your site will do better and better with each successive update.
Additionally, you may find that other sites will link to you simply because you
have a front page link on a high quality, high page rank site.
